Appalachian State University’s division of Student Affairs develops lifelong learners and leaders by engaging and challenging students within a culture of care and inclusion. We aspire to transform all students through a foundation of care and engagement.

Kwanzaa was created by Maulana Karenga to celebrate African American culture with seven principles that theme each day from December 26th through January 1st.

  • Umoja : Unity
  • Kujichagulia : Self-determination
  • Ujima : Collective work & responsibility
  • Ujamaa : Cooperative economics
  • Nia : Purpose
  • Kuumba : Creativity
  • Imani : Faith

The Black Student Association celebrates this holiday annually. This year's celebration included a family-style meal, presentations on the seven principles, and fellowship in the Plemmons Student Union Solarium on November 29th. 

In February 2023, we will hold our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.  Please be on the lookout for details coming soon!
