Student Leadership and Service Awards

Each year, Appalachian State University recognizes Student Leaders for their service and leadership to Appalachian State University. These awards are presented at a Student Leadership Award Ceremony sponsored by the Office of Student Development.  This ceremony will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Ronny L. Brooks Leadership Award

The Ronny Brooks Leadership Award is intended to recognize Appalachian students who have distinguished themselves through the leadership that they provided to Appalachian students, programs, and/or organizations. This award is to recognize exemplary leadership reflected in both breadth and depth. Students who are nominated for this award must have demonstrated that their leadership goes beyond what is expected in the normal course of their leadership roles, and extends into providing leadership that has fostered the development of others, empowered students, contributed in significant and specific ways to their respective organization(s), and furthered Appalachian’s goal of having an engaged student body.

Bobby L. Dunnigan Service Award

This award is named for Bobby L. Dunnigan who served Appalachian State University in a variety of leadership roles finishing his career as the Director of Residence Life. This award is intended to recognize those students who are employed in the Division of Student Development at Appalachian State University and have distinguished themselves through the scope and quality of their service during their employment.

Gregory S. Blimling Award for Outstanding Graduate Student in Student Development

Named for a previous Vice Chancellor for Student Development, this award's recipients must have, as their primary responsibility, a graduate assistantship in an office in the Division of Student Development. This award is not for persons who are full time employees and are taking graduate level courses. While their major may be in any discipline, recipients must be employed as graduate assistants in Student Development. Recipients will be degree-seeking students.

Berardino DiBernardi Student Award for Leadership and Legacy

The Berardino DiBernardi Leadership and Legacy Award celebrates the traditions and importance of leadership, service and legacy that Berardino “Dino” DiBernardi emphasized in his significant and varied roles during his 38 years at Appalachian State University.  Since 1977, Dino was involved and provided leadership in almost every department in the Division of Student Development at Appalachian State University with his last role being the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Development.  The recipient of this award will be selected based on evidence of not only academic success but a strong commitment to community service, university involvement through student leadership, achievement of personal and educational goals, and evidence of leaving Appalachian State University and the community a better place.  The recipient will long be remembered for their individual contribution(s) to Appalachian State University and the community at large.
